Стандарт распространяется на метод определения содержания в консистентных смазках веществ, нерастворимых в спиртобензольной смеси и горячей дистиллированной воде. Метод заключается в экстрагировании консистентной смазки спиртобензольной смесью, обработке осадка на фильтре горячей дистиллированной водой и определении веса нерастворившегося остатка. Применение метода устанавливается в стандартах, ведомственных технических условиях или иной технической документации на каждый вид смазки.
