The standard establishes general requirements for the corrosion protection of the external surface of underground (including underwater with dredging in the bottom) steel structures laid below the surface of the earth or in embankment made of carbon and low alloy steels (hereinafter referred to as structures): natural gas pipelines (trunk and distribution gas pipelines), oil, oil products, and outlets from them; reservoirs (including trench type); water pipes; heat pipelines; piles, grooves, columns and other supporting steel underground structures. The standard also establishes requirements for limiting leakage currents at sources of stray currents that affect the protection against corrosion of underground structures: electrified rail transport, direct-current power transmission lines through the wire-to-ground system, industrial enterprises that consume a constant electric current for technological purposes. The standard does not apply to the following facilities: reinforced concrete and cast iron structures; for special defense and space facilities, marine and coastal facilities, including pipelines; constructions of nuclear, tidal, hydroelectric stations and dams; communications laid in buildings; metal sheathed cables; heat network pipelines with polyurethane foam thermal insulation and a rigid polyethylene sheath pipe (pipe-in-pipe construction), which have a functioning system for the operative remote monitoring of the insulation status of pipelines.
