The standard applies to automatic electrical control devices intended for use in the composition, on or in conjunction with household equipment and similar purposes. For equipment, electricity, gas, oil products, solid fuel, solar thermal energy, etc., or a combination of them can be used as a source of energy. The standard is applied to control devices for building automation in the field of application of ISO 16484. The standard is also applied to automatic electric control devices for equipment that can be used by the public, in particular equipment intended for use in shops, offices, hospitals, farms, commercial and industrial premises. The standard also applies to individual control devices used as part of a control system, or control devices that are mechanically integrated into multifunction control devices with non-electrical outputs. The standard also applies to relays that are used as control devices for devices in the IEC 60335 application area. Additional safety requirements and relay trip values, when used as control devices for devices from the IEC 60335 application area, are contained in Appendix U. The standard does not apply for automatic electrical control devices designed exclusively for industrial purposes, unless specified in the relevant part 2 or equipment standard.

Для оборудования, в качестве источника энергии, может использоваться электричество, газ, нефтепродукты, твердое топливо, солнечную тепловую энергии и пр., или комбинацию из них. Стандарт применяют к управляющим устройствам для автоматизации зданий в области применения ISO 16484. Стандарт также применяют к автоматическим электрическим управляющим устройствам для оборудования, которое может быть использовано населением, в частности оборудование, предназначенное для использования в магазинах, офисах, больницах, фермах, коммерческих и промышленных помещениях. Стандарт также применим к отдельным управляющим устройствам, используемым в качестве части системы управления, или управляющим устройствам, которые механически интегрированы в многофункциональные управляющие устройства с неэлектрическими выходами. Стандарт также применим к реле, которые используют в качестве управляющих устройств для приборов в области применения IEC 60335.
