The standard establishes requirements for electro-acoustic characteristics for instruments of three types intended for measuring sound: conventional sound level meters, which measure the sound level with an exponential time correction; integrating-averaging sound level meters, which measure the linearly time-averaged sound level; integrating sound level meters that measure the level of sound exposure. The standard applies to sound level meters of various designs. The standard establishes requirements for sound level meters of the 1st and 2nd class.

Стандарт устанавливает требования к электроакустическим характеристикам для приборов трех видов, предназначенных для измерения звука: обычные шумомеры, которые измеряют уровень звука с экспоненциальной временной коррекцией; интегрирующие-усредняющие шумомеры, которые измеряют линейно усредненный по времени уровень звука; интегрирующие шумомеры, которые измеряют уровень звукового воздействия. Стандарт распространяется на шумомеры различных конструкций. Стандарт устанавливает требования к шумомерам 1-го и2-го класса.
